Whilst grieving for their husband and father, an eviction notice forces Anabel and her mother Delia from their Barcelona home back to the olive groves of Jaén, which they once left looking for a better future. Together, they must look for a way to rebuild their future by going back to their abandoned roots, a process complicated by unprocessed grief and financial strife.
This film's Spanish title, “Los Tortuga”, is a common term used for the hundreds of thousands of Andalusians who fled the Southern region to work in the Spain's big cities. In her sophomore feature, director Belén Funes follows her Goya-winning debut A Thief’s Daughter with this tender coming-of-age drama which explores mother-daughter bonds and themes of displacement through two generations of migrants.
